A holy-crap-awesome point-and-click Flash adventure to solve a mechanical puzzle, based on a real dam and horrifyingly unsafe hiking path in Spain.

http://cargoweasel.livejournal.com/479190.html Cargo has a video.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caminito_del_Rey The real thing.

Seriously, play it. This reminded me a lot of Myst, except that this is much shorter. A good thing, too--I've stayed up far too late tonight already. It's too freaking hot.

*Excellent* post on online communication--from the article:

"The Internet was hard-wired to create misunderstandings and a lack of empathy," says Houminer. "Forums and online environments create an initial impression of paradise for empathic needs. As long as this works, it's great. When we respond to this need, there is no aggression, but we are human, and cannot respond all the time. That is when rage erupts. If I send a message to the forum and do not get a response within minutes, or hours at most, I feel abandoned. The Internet has caused us to become addicted to instantaneous responses and has reduced our ability to cope with frustration."

I don't consider myself the definitive expert by any means, that is for sure. However from time to time I have people ask me how to create an animated spiral gif and it has been on my to do list for quite some time to write tutorial. Finally today I got around to doing it. The tutorial can be viewed here:

Photoshop Spiral Tutorial

It is written in such a way that I feel those new to Photoshop can also benefit.

I've been reading Gurney Journey since a bit after it started, back in the fall.

If you're from my generation, the current early twenty-somethings (or one close to it), you probably read Gurney's Dinatopia books as a kid and have fond memories of both the awesome illustration and the intriguing worldbuilding concepts.

His blog is an amazing wealth of information for illustrators and painters alike. It updates daily and often has breakdowns of specific aspects of illustration/painting, such as painting moonlit scenes, as well as more conceptual ideas like translating animal characteristics into the human form.

He has entries about writing as well.

Yargh Spider Ball [May. 18th, 2008|08:34 am]

Okay, so I'm playing Metroid Prime 2, right? And I roll into the Spider Ball Guardian's area without scanning him, see? So I had to play most of that fight over again when I realized I wouldn't get another chance to scan him.

Then...

After an agonizingly difficult battle, I roll into the next few rooms, find a Spider Ball puzzle, and proceed to get most of the way through it.

Only to drop down the exit chute with the Missile Expansion tantalizingly out of reach.

No problem, I think, my eye twitching, I did it once, I can do it again, right? Right?

WRONG.

Y'see, the first time around, I didn't have one of those subverted Luminoth robots roaming the room, shooting at me, making the floor shake, getting in my view, and generally making it impossible for me to either finish the puzzle or escape.

Without having saved after getting the Spider Ball.

Needless to say, next time I beat the Spider Ball Guardian, I immediately went back to the save station and saved.

Moral of the story? SAVE YOUR GAME. It doesn't matter which.

I'M SO SORRY I'VE BEEN REALLY TERRIBLE WITH COMMENTS LATELY AND AHJRSUIAHFIA

and I'm sorry this isn't any more substantial, but it turns out that my Unfounded Revenge/Smashing Song of Praise flash (the youtube version) got featured in the PK Tube'n Update/Extension post! :D :D They like it yaaaaay although i'm more proud of the duster bit than the bit they chose but glee anyway :D

Although personally, I'm rooting for Bring Lucas to America, which is about the saddest and cutest thing I've ever seen. WHAT AN AWESOME IDEA.
And also this piano medley is super awesome.

I really don't even care if I win, I don't know what I'd do with the prizes anyway. |D I just want to help spread the word around for EarthBound and Mother 3, you know? THAT'S WHAT REALLY COUNTS. THAT'S WHY I DID MY SCREENCAP ADVENTURE, WHY I DO FANART AND FLASH, ALL OF IT, TO TRY AND SHARE THIS WONDERFUL AND MAGICAL EXPERIENCE WITH OTHERS i'm like a super lame hippie for things no normal person cares about what's wrong with me

I'm still all happy about that I must admit. :D I actually have a second flash in mind to the Eight Melodies from the Mother 1+2 album that'd be really sweet if I actually ever do it, but we'll see. God the eight melodies bring tears to my eyes every single time. they just bring back so many memories. :O

Sing a melody of love, of love~

SPEAKING OF MUSIC, HERE HAVE SOME

Remember that Animusic thing I mentioned? I really love Pogo Sticks (video) which REALLY reminds me of the StarCraft Terran music at points, Resonant Chamber (video) (which, for some bizarre reason, reminded both me AND Sheena of Furcadia of all things), Fiber Bundles (video), and Heavy Light (video). :D :D I love this stuff so much~
I also like the Synth version of Fiber Bundles without the backbeat, don't mind me. It's just kind of neat.
I can't believe I didn't have the Ding Ding Dong (Tra La La) song until now. I love the hook for it. I AM COMPLETELY CAPABLE OF IGNORING INCREDIBLY STUPID, TRITE, RIDICULOUS LYRICS IN FAVOR OF A CATCHY MELODY OKAY. You cannot be a fan of techno/dance/europop/trance without this ability.
I met a girl she said her name was Sue, oh woah woah oh la la la~
Do you remember that incredibly cliche Angel musical I talked about a while ago that had the awesome music? They're finally releasing some demo tracks, and here's one for one of my favorite tracks from the whole thing, Forgotten. God the chorus for this get stuck in my head SO easily. WHY WON'T THEY RELEASE LIBERTAS IMPERIO ARGH
Actually, even more infuriating is that apparently they DID release Libertas Imperio for a brief time, THEN TOOK IT DOWN. AND WE MISSED IT. D: we've been searching but now we can't find it anywhere (Fearsum, can you assist? D:)
There's also What If from the same Paradise Lost thing, although I don't like it quite as much as the other tracks. :B
YES I RIPPED THAT SPEED RACER SONG OKAY IT'S AWESOME speaking of which I saw the movie and greatly enjoyed it. SCREW THE HATERS.
Chris Brown - Forever is just delicious all the way through. FEARSUM THERE'S A REMIX OF THIS THAT SHEENA WAS TELLING ME ABOUT THAT MAKES IT EVEN MORE AWESOME, CAN YOU HELP? god i love vocoders

more later maybe~

Portland on my mind [May. 18th, 2008|02:35 am]

sowelu
Turned down the fulltime offer. Mental health and personal growth are more important than financial stability, and I'm not doing too badly there anyway. This means I've got a bit over three months to hunt down a tech job near Portland or Beaverton. It's really not a bad situation. I'll have trouble thinking about anything besides the move, though.

I'm so happy that I'll have a place to live once I head down there...That's the one thing that is really making this all possible, or at least, making it possible enough to go through with. (Thank you!)

I've been kind of a ball of stress, but I think I'm back out the other side now.

Downside to having a weird schedule, driving to Portland and all over the place: Didn't hit the gym as much as I've been meaning to. Once or twice a week lately, which just plain is not enough.

Have a couple friends down near Portland that I didn't get to see last time. Worried about one of 'em...You know who you are, sorry I haven't been in better touch.

...I picked up Alan Moore's Watchmen at Powell's last weekend. Lost most of today to it. Wonderful stuff. Also, tabletop Werewolf game tomorrow. I think that means I'd better sleep!

My new favorite traffic school [May. 17th, 2008|05:50 pm]

geddcoon
I got a speeding ticket not too long ago... for going 80! That's a snail's pace on SoCal freeways. But whatever, I got nailed. They're patrolling my commuting path, the 5 corridor between Oceanside and San Clemente, much more heavily these days, and I need to be careful.

Anyway, I just finished traffic school at "Payless - Low Cost - Speedy Online Traffic School". They have a stupid name but they are approved by the court and they don't make you go to any 3rd party site for itendtity verification. And they are FAST. I finished the whole course (sign-up, readings, quizzes, ID verification, and final test) in under 30 minutes.

There was one odd thing about the ID verification... they use Experian to verify the test-taker's identity, and the agency asked me some strange questions. "What is your highest level of education?" How would Experian know this? I never told them. Apparently Experian didn't actually know this because they got the answer wrong. I put "Graduate Degree" and they said "NO". I finished my Master's in 2003. Are we supposed to inform the credit agencies whenever we graduate from something?
